Danny Gray ButtCrack Solo Harley Seat Review
If you are a fan of Harley Davidson motorcycles, then you no doubt have heard of or seen articles about Danny Gray Harley seats. Danny Gray has been in the seat building business for better than 35 years and has literally taken his small business and built it into one of hte most respected seat brands in the industry. I recently had the opportunity to spend some time aboard an FXST outfitted with a Danny Gray Butt Crack Solo seat and here is my opinion on this saddle.
Danny Gray Buttcrack Solo
First off, you already know you are dealing with a marketing genius when they use the word "buttcrack" in the name, who's going to forget that name? Nobody. Now I should put out a disclaimer that I am more of a "looks" kind of guy when it comes to the FXST, one of my own bikes is a slammed FXSTB and I built it to have a certain "look" and I don't really ride it long distances, I have a Street Glide to do the touring with, so looks is high on my priority list when it comes to a seat. Comfort is great, but if comfort is my top priority then I wouldn't be riding an FXST to begin with. For me to be impressed, the seat has to fit the bike just right for me to be impressed, and the Danny Gray buttcrack solo seat fits the bill well, it's hot looking.
It hugs the contours of the bike nicely and has a lowered, sleek performance look that matches a lowered softail nicely. I suppose it would look great on a regular softail too, I am just also partial to slammed FXST bikes. So in regards to the first test, looks, the Danny Gray Buttcrack Solo looks awesome.
Danny Gray Solo Comfort
Describing comfort is a tough task, because comfort is very subjective but after logging a hundred miles or so on this seat, I was surprised at how comfortable it was. My own FXST has a LePera Bare Bones solo on it but this Danny Gray seat is much more comfortable than that seat. No hot spots and decent circulation remained throughout the entire ride, which was a nice surprise.
All in all, I would say that Buttcrack solo is pretty darn comfortable for the style of seat that it is. I found it to be much more plush than my Bare Bones solo and while 100 miles is certainly no iron butt type ride, it is definitely far enough to get an idea of whether a saddle will work nicely and this one does.
Danny Gray Solo Construction
You only need to take one look at the Buttcrack Solo, (that just doesn't sound right) to know that is very well made. These seats use a hand laid fiberglass pan that is thick enough that it will hold up for a long time and they wrap their seats with a genuine leather seating area combined with vinyl bottom pieces. Not much is more durable of a material than leather.
If you've never had the pleasure of riding a genuine leather seat, then you won't be able to appreciate it when I say that it is MUCH more comfortable than vinyl. Leather breathes different than vinyl and you will definitely feel the difference, it's a cooler eat to sit on and this can be a big deal in hotter climates. Leather might require a bit of time to truly break in and get to the highest level of comfort but once it does, the ride is superb and worth the effort.
Danny Gray Solo Seat Conclusion
In summary I think you can tell that I like this seat a lot. I would absolutely feel great about recommending it to anyone interested in a quality solo seat for their Harley Davidson motorcycle. I should also mention that Danny Gray isn't a one trick pony and they make a wide variety of seats other than this hot little solo number so whether you are after a touring seat or a bar hopper, I'd definitely give their seat lineup a look and see what they might have for you.
